The Best Short Term & Long Term ROI for Your Business

There are a lot of ways to invest in your business but after 10 years of being a CEO, I still maintain that investing in your strategic partnership is the #1 investment you can make in your business –both in the short term and long term. Maybe you’re thinking about hiring your first assistant. Or you’ve just hired your first assistant. Or maybe you are looking to build a stronger strategic partnership with your current assistant. Now what?

As much as we want our assistants/Chiefs of Staff/Force Multipliers/Executive Assistants to be able to read our minds and anticipate our every need, while never asking a question, while simultaneously creating efficiencies in the office and coming up with ideas on how to maximize our time and help the company grow… all within the first hour, a true strategic partnership takes time and a whole lot of work!

Lauren Bradley, Founder of The Officials, and a private Personal Assistant, spoke the truth when she said, “Learning your [the leaders] habits, patterns, decision making and more takes time. I would say it can take a year for someone to really truly start to anticipate your needs. So they need your time in the beginning. It’s an investment. Don’t skip your stand ups and one to ones. Invest in them. You need to find the right person you vibe with. If you’ve never hired an EA before and the first one you hire doesn’t quite match as you had hoped then please don’t write off assistants. It takes time to find one that clicks. And you get what you put in. Invest your time and trust and the partnership grows and thrives. And for god sakes give them a training budget. Best money ever spent.”

Yes, I know your standards and expectations are high and you want your Force Multiplier running on all cylinders immediately. They want that too. The fastest way to get there is by investing into the partnership through purposeful meetings and communication, coaching and training (together!), and learning about each other’s natural behavior, communication, leadership, and work styles.

Depending on the size and scope of your organization, you may not be the one to train your right hand. That’s okay. But if you’re not going to do it, then invest in training courses or coaching to get them up to speed. That being said, no training can replicate the time you two spend together. That is where a true partnership is formed.

So, what exactly does being purposeful about creating a partnership with your Force Multiplier accomplish now and in the future?

Short Term ROI:

  • Communication is improved in the C-Suite immediately. By understanding each other’s behavioral strengths and weaknesses, how you each prefer to communicate, as well as each other’s quirks, you can remove the ego and get down to business. Clarity is power. So, too, is removing any attachment to the personal. Communication in the C-Suite is only as effective as the transparent communication between strategic partners.
  • You learn where you need to grow. Leadership is hard. Leading your Force Multiplier may be one of your biggest challenges and one of your greatest opportunities for growth. As you start navigating your strategic partnership you’re going to see where you excel and where you need some extra help. A great Force Multiplier who is empowered to challenge you, ask probing questions, and share his/her distinct viewpoint is going to tell you and show you where you need to step up. Self-awareness is the key to success. Who doesn’t want a strategic partner who holds up a mirror for you?
  • You gain time back by giving up control. Perhaps the most difficult and most rewarding part of having a Force Multiplier by your side is giving up control and gaining time back in your day. Look, if you hire an assistant, Chief of Staff, or Personal Assistant and you’re still reluctant to give up your calendar, email, and a degree of decision making, then you are the assistant, Chief of Staff, or Personal Assistant and you shouldn’t have made the hire in the first place.

Long Term ROI:

  • Communication across the entire organization improves drastically. When communication between a leader and their right hand is firing on all cylinders it’s like rocket fuel for the entire organization. Meetings are purposeful. Radically transparent communication moves projects forward faster. The right people are in the right meetings at the right time. The vision is communicated regularly. And so much more. This is how companies grow, pivot, and thrive during good times and bad.
  • You 10X (yes, your Force Multiplier multiplies) what you normally would accomplish on your own. An EA is there to help the Executive complete his or her work. It’s like taking one massive job and splitting it down the middle based on each of your strengths. A great assistant who spends time with their leader learning their language, their thought process, their decision-making process and leadership principles is invaluable. You are operating in your 20% and focused exclusively on leading and growing the organization, while leaving the details, project management, team accountability, and execution to your right hand who has learned to think like a CEO. Your reach is maximized and multiplied. Better yet, as you continue to invest time into your strategic partner, they in turn will continue to invest time into you. That means holding you highly accountable to your personal and professional objectives. Together, you become stronger, better leaders, and ultimately achieve more than you ever could on your own.

Think about how multiplying your force would translate into the bottom line of your business when it comes not only to profits, but company culture, employee retainment, PR and talent acquisition. It’s an absolute no brainer, but it doesn’t happen magically.
