The Self-Confidence Formula, The 1 Hour Rule, & Year-End HR Compliance

When I first started working with my former Executive, Adam, he “only” had three businesses – he owned a real estate team, a real estate brokerage, and several investment properties. Much of my time during the first three years of our partnership was spent in the real estate world and about 80% of it working closely with the real estate team.

I enthusiastically prepped for our team meetings each week where we would go over market stats, team production numbers, upcoming client events and lead generation initiatives, and of course, some sort of personal development or leadership lessons via Tom Ferry, Tony Robbins, a Navy SEAL, Marie Forleo, or Adam himself. I loved every second of it!

For a couple of years we kicked off each meeting by reading the Self-Confidence Formula from Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich. We would have each new team member sign and date the Formula. Published in 1937, the Self-Confidence Formula was part of our 2010 culture, and it is still just as powerful today.

The Self-Confidence Formula

  1. I know that I have the ability to achieve the object of my Definite Purpose in life. Therefore I demand of myself persistent, continuous action toward its attainment, and I here and now promise to take such action.
  2. I realize the dominating thoughts of my mind will eventually reproduce themselves in outward, physical action and gradually transform themselves into physical reality. Therefore I will concentrate my thoughts for 30 minutes daily upon the task of thinking of the person I intend to become, thereby creating in my mind a clear mental picture of that person.
  3. I know through the principle of autosuggestion that any desire that I persistently hold in my mind will eventually seek expression through some practical means of attaining the object. Therefore I will devote 10 minutes daily to demanding of myself the development of self-confidence.
  4. I have clearly written down a description of my Definite Chief Aim in life. I will never stop trying until I have developed sufficient self-confidence for its attainment.
  5. I fully realize that no wealth or position can long endure unless built upon truth and justice. Therefore I will engage in no transaction that does not benefit all whom it affects. I will succeed by attracting to myself the forces I wish to use, and the cooperation of other people. I will induce others to serve me because of my willingness to serve others. I will eliminate hatred, envy, jealousy, selfishness and cynicism by developing love for all humanity because I know that a negative attitude toward others can never bring me success. I will cause others to believe in me, because I will believe in them, and in myself.

I will sign my name to this formula, commit to memory and repeat it aloud once a day in full faith that it will gradually influence my thoughts and actions so I will become a self reliant and successful person.

WEEKLY TOP 5

1.

If you’re trying to cut back on your screen time (like I am!), take a page out of Jeff Bezos’s book and consider his “1 hour rule”. Bezos’s goes for a slow morning of no phones and instead reads the paper, drinks coffee, and spends time with family. I clearly works for Jeff and neuroscience agrees. Read more at Inc.com and consider adopting the 1-hour rule!

As leaders and Force Multipliers, decision-making is an integral part of our day-to-day. I’m always looking for ways to make better decisions! Harvard Business Review offers a simple way to do so – journal! I particularly liked this article, because I am also reading The Artist’s Way right now and, at just four weeks in, I can attest to the power of daily journaling with my “morning pages”. Do you journal? Maybe it’s time to start!

4.

I grew up watching Connie Chung on CBS Evening News (little did I know that she was making history as the first woman and Asian to co-anchor that program). She does not hold back as she details her incredible career, the influence of her family’s traditions, dealing with overt sexism and racism, and her relationship with Maury Povich. Connie Chung became a household name for a reason and Connie: A Memoir is simply a delight to listen to!
