Hurricane Relief, 1 Year After Quitting My Job, & 6 Disciplines of Strategic Thinking

Like so many others across the United States, I’ve been glued to the news and social media watching the destruction of Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton wreak havoc on communities. The Southeast was devastated by Helene just weeks ago and recovery efforts are still underway (and will undoubtedly be for months to come). Hurricane Milton made landfall last night and it’s still too soon to know exactly how Florida will be impacted by Milton. But there is no doubt it is, and will be, severely effected.

If you’re wondering how you can help, here are a few organizations to consider:

Unfortunately, there are bad actors, especially during times of crisis, so please do your due diligence and be aware of possible scams. Check out Charity Navigator to learn more about donor resources and charity ratings.

If there are other ways you know how to help, please let me know and I will do my best to share with the Founder & Force Multiplier community.

My thoughts and prayers are with everyone who has been impacted. ❤️

One Year Later: What I’ve Been Thinking About Since Quitting My Job

One year after quitting my corporate job, I can tell you that the past year has been pretty ordinary. I didn’t spend my career break traveling or writing my memoir. I didn’t drastically change my habits or routine. In fact, I didn’t change much or do much at all! Which may be the biggest lesson I learned. It is actually validating and affirming when you realize the life you’re living is pretty damn great! So, rather than share some half-baked lessons, I’ll let you in on some of the random things I’ve been thinking about this past year. Enjoy!

Weekly Top 5

  1. Are great strategic thinkers born or are they made? Michael Watkins, professor of leadership, says the answer is “yes”. Nature, nurture, and experience all come into play with strategic thinking. Strategic thinking is a top skill for the Force Multipliers of the future (and for all leaders). Don’t miss this video that breaks down the six key mental disciplines that underlie our ability to recognize, prioritize, and mobilize.
  2. According to Mackenzie Lee, CEO of Cedar, “The Office of the CEO is the team that works together to maximize the impact of the CEO by leveraging a strong leadership operating system.” EAs and Chiefs of Staff are at the heart of building an Office of the CEO. Should you think about building one? And how do you get started? Check out Lee’s article, “How to Build a World-Class Office of the CEO” in Executive Support Magazine and start making an invaluable impact on your organization.
  3. Who doesn’t love a comeback story? After the failure of Pets.com, former CEO Julie Wainwright was a Silicon Valley pariah, making her essentially “unemployable.” So, what did she do? She created her own job and founded The RealReal which was valued at $1.3 billion when she left in 2022. Now, Julie is on to her next venture – Ahara, a personalized nutrition company. Check out Julie’s story of innovation, failure, and resilience on Billion Dollar Moves.
  4. Ever paralyzed by indecision? Afraid that the right answer or the best choice is just outside your reach? Do you wake up in the middle of the night thinking that a bit more research or another conversation with a friend will give you the insight you’re looking for? I know I do! Sahil Bloom offers three mindset shifts that helped him conquer overthinking for good. Check them out!
  5. The days are getting shorter (at least in the Northern Hemisphere), which means it’s time to break out your vitamin D supplements and light therapy lamps. Wirecutter explains how light therapy lamps work and recommends their top 3 picks (with prices ranging from about $70 to $200). Go on, get [a] happy [light]!
